Sometimes I see "after banns" , sometimes I see "by banns"
What's the difference?

None I would say. Marriage in the church after banns have been read
is
marriage by banns, as opposed to marriage by licence.
Judith passed away in October 2018

I hadn't realized before that some records use one phrase, but other records use the other.
FH allows you to choose between them.
