  • American look up please

    Hi

I wonder if someone could supply information regarding William Britland born 1820 Cromford, Derbyshire. I think he emigrated to the U.S c1842? with his wife Hannah and daughter Ellen born 1840.

    Many thanks,

    Sandra

          Hi Julie,

Thank you for the information. That looks like the family. I have some notes and I think that William was, at some time, living in Carthage. However, as I do not have world wide ancestry I can not view the record. Are they showing on any other census? I think William died in 1884.
I think he also lived in Harrisville.

familysearch has indexed - and often includes the actual census page - most if not all US censuses. It also includes many other US records.

            Here's 1870:

you can try to find a regional history book - many are online, as their copyrights expired a long time ago. This seems to have compiled many sources, but I don't think they have them online:

I can't see any other record, but then again Ancestry could have his name mistranscribed.. i'll have another look and see if I can spot anything.

I like the first of these records for William the son. It was common for families (at least, the men) to head west for opportunity & land:

Using Heritage quest's place index, I found Hannah in 1880, surname transcribed Brioland. I don't know how it's transcribed in Ancestry or Familysearch. William is there with her, and it's just the two of them. They are in Harrisville
Found the identifiers: Series T9, Roll 857, Page 61
