  • Hotelkeepers and Insolvency

    Hello
I am researching a Charles Egan who was a Hotelkeeper in Glen Innes between 1875 to 1878 the Hotels were called the Royal and Telegraph Hotel he became insolvent on 27/8/1878, dose any one have access to the insolvency records if so your assistance would be appreciated.
Charles was also a policeman before purchasing the Hotels and was the gold escort from Murrurundi to Armidale any information about this part of his life would also make me very happy.
Thank you for taking the time to read this thread ossiegirl

You should find insolvency records in the official Gazettes (London and Edinburgh). The archives of the London Gazette are on line but I don't know about Edinburgh. Last time I looked I just Googled London Gazette.

Not sure what you are hoping to find though - all the insolvency records I have seen in the Gazette are just lists of names and addresses and dates of the various hearings. I've never seen the nitty gritty stuff about WHY they went bankrupt.

As a matter of interest - were Australian insolvencies included in the LG??

It doesn't look as though the local paper (Glen Innes Examiner) is included in TROVE - have you been in contact with the local museum in Glen Innes - the wonderfully named Land of the Beardies History House Museum and Research Centre - http://www.beardieshistoryhouse.info/

Another possibility could be NSW State Records??

It's indexed by NSW State Records, but they don't offer a copying service for insolvency files, so you'd need to find someone to go there on your behalf.

The name Charles Egan also appears in a couple of other indexes on that site: just do a keyname search to find them.
