I've got him before and after but just cannot locate him in 1891 and 1881

You're welcome :-) Wasting time over my morning coffee before starting work so happy to have a distraction!

Wish finding people in the census was always as easy as just checking a different transcription.

Can i ask what was different in the transcription that i assume made it difficult for me to find it?

I guessed you were looking on Ancestry so looked on FindMyPast and found both entries without much searching.

Ancestry has the 1891 Census entry above indexed as Frederick & Amy Irne Hirth - which I guess made them hard to find!

The 1881 Census entry is correctly indexed on Ancestry as Fred Hiatt - did you search for Fred as well as Frederick?

if you use wildcards.. you get a better selection of possible names, so, Fre** would pick Fred and Frederick/Fredric
