  • Fanduie?

I have a family tree, created in 1906, for McLellans from Glenlyon, Perth, Scotland. The tree begins in 1706, and lists several individuals' birthplace as Fanduie. One reference is to "Craigiany and Fanduie". I can't find Craigiany, either.

Also, the first use of it is - "at Fanduie, Fortingall" - could it have been an area of Fortingall, or a building or fortress?

    Another place: Tulichmhulin

I haven't found these on google or wikipedia.

    Thanks
    Sarah

    Names of homesteads/crofts/farms perhaps?

(I have a rellie who gave Bohemia as pob - turned out that that was one of two farms, either Upper Bohemia, or Lower Bohemia, neighbouring farms outside the main settlement of the village where the family lived for years!)

I can't help with these names but in remoter areas it would be common to name the actual farm or settlement from which the person came within a parish. I have seen this in the Border counties and it can be very puzzling! Maybe if you got hold of a large scale map you might find the house/farm/hamlet still with the same name.

My thoughts were along those lines. I wonder, too, if I find the parish registers, if the birth record will list abode as Fanduie

And there's always a risk that it's a variably-spelt name based on Gaelic.

Yes, the tree indicates McLellan may also be spelled MacIlleolan. The name search feature on FamilySearch doesn't know about that variation - I have to check twice when searching. Thanks, Christine.

I sometimes find that a search on StreetMap produces a result where the farm etc. is still extant. Same applies to Google. I've found a number of mid-late 19th. century farms that still exist. One or two got turned into field centres or B&Bs.

I doubt if streetmap will help in this case as Glen Lyon is a single road, miles and miles of it and that mostly uninhabited. The present day village of Fortingall is "new", being completely rebuilt around 1900 out of the derelict remains of the old village.

Fortingall was part of a parish which covered 300 sq miles. I think it most likely that Fanduie was a farmstead or homestead, now completely derelict.

I am sure that the parish registers would mention "Fanduie" - but that wouldn't tell you where it was, in 300 square miles.

I have a similar problem with an ancestor who was born in Bilsdale - a vast area of open land in North Yorkshire. I have consulted the parish register for Bilsdale Midcable (an "outpost" chapel) but hardly any addresses are given, apart from "north side" or similar! The surname was Atkinson and there were several Atkinson families living in the dale at the same time, and at that time the register recorded the name of the father only. As tenancies could be carried on for up to 5 generations, the families often stayed in situ for over 100 years.
I don't think I can get anywhere further with this line.

I have found reference to "Tullochullin" in the church register of Fortingall, in 1859. Death of Isabella Robertson, wife of a farmer and grazier of Tullochullin. I think that means it is definitely the name of a farmstead.

Ah! in the same register, a reference to "Craigianie" in 1869.

If you google Craigianie, there's loads of stuff - not sure how relevant but you can decide that, lol.

EDIT - in 1871, Craigianie was a farmhouse, situated between Camasvrachan (a farmhouse) and Wester Slatich (another farmhouse). I also found reference to "Craigianie, a stone farmhouse in Fortingall parish" Camusvrachan is now a B and B, with photo if you google it.

EDIT again - I've found grid references for modern OS maps

                            Craigianie -NN 627 476
Tullich (now submerged) approx NN 424 420

Thanks, OC & Uncle John - I haven't really started exploring this line - I have English ancestors that I've been working on, and haven't started exploring Scotland's People yet. There's always a learning curve in new research areas.

It's online. (But only 10 pages of it). Everything I've given you above is from google.

Cannot find Fanduie though and I wonder if it was once attached to Craigianie but is since derelict. Incidentally, by 1901, the only person living at Craigianie was a shepherd.

I found a couple interesting websites, including this one that lists Glenlyon "settlements":
