  • Record Office: Anyone in Sidmouth please?

If anyone is visiting Sidmouth records in the future, could you kindly check the following for me. Basically its the burial information on one Charles Baizley buried Sidmouth 30 July 1833.

    Background to the query:

We have a Mark Charles Baizley born 10 April 1803 in Deptford (London) to Thomas Baizley and wife Sophia Acton. Thomas was working at the Royal Docks in Deptford.

He appears to rarely use the name Mark and is known as Charles even when he marries Mary Ann Joyce in Southwark, London on 25 December 1825.

On 31 December 1826, his son, Charles Baizley, is baptised in Southwark, yet there is a note that he was born in Sidmouth on 19 October 1826. Charles senior is shown as "servant" on the baptism record.

The mystery is, Charles Baizley senior is apparently deceased by the 1841 census and Mary Ann is a widow living in London with Charles junior. We have searched for a burial for him in London but have not found one that fits. We have however just come across a burial of a Charles Baizley in Sidmouth in 1833.

Now, this seems a possible as its the right name, a date that would fit and also the place Sidmouth is clearly somewhere the Baizleys had at least visited previously. We also wonder why there appears to be only one child born to the couple - and why he was born in Sidmouth.

Why was Charles Baizley senior in Sidmouth with his family in 1826 when Charles junior was born. And if this burial is our Charles, why was he living in Sidmouth at that time. And were any other children born/buried in Sidmouth. Possibly with another woman?
