Today marks the launch of two exciting new sets of records to bring you closer to your Manchester ancestors: the Manchester Police Index 1812-1941 and Prestwich Asylum Admissions 1851-1901.
Manchester Police Index 1812-1941
The index contains 10,636 records of Manchester police officers from 1812 to 1941.
The records tell you the following information about your ancestor: age, place of birth, religion, trade and whether married or single. You may also be able to find out details of previous employment – in many cases involving military service – or reason for leaving.

Prestwich Asylum Admissions 1851-1901
Search for your ancestors in 22,722 records of male and female admissions to the Prestwich asylum from January 1851 to March 1901.
Each patient’s record covers their stay in the asylum from admission to discharge. The records contain basic information collected when the patient was admitted, such as age, occupation, marital status, religious affiliation and number of children, as well as an outline of how they came to be admitted. The later admissions may be supplemented by a photograph of the patient.
