  • Looking up Addresses only in Census's

Will some kind person explain how one looks up a specific address in Census Records, please.

The easiest way is via Findmypast which has an address search facility.

It is possible, via Ancestry, to find census information applicable to specific places but only really works well if you are looking at small villages or towns. You do this by viewing the "description of the enumeration district" which can be accessed via the right hand drop down menus on any Ancestry census search page, e.g. 1851 census - http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8860 - drop down menu on right under Browse collection.

The "Your Archives Historical Streets Project" can also give you pointers to specific areas, but is not complete for all censuses.

Are you looking for something specific?

I don't think there is any scope on Ancestry for entering an address but you can narrow the search down by using the side panel for 'browsing the image set'.

Start by selecting the census you want to search in and then in the side panel you can put the county, civil parish and then you get the list of enumeration districts which are all numbered. You then click on the description of the district which gives a narrative of the are covered in that particular district. Hopefully you will see the road you are looking for and if so click on that district for the set of images it contains.

The tedious part is then having to look at each image to find the address you want - there is no index of addresses unfortunately.
