  • James Duncan b c1853

Am unable to find BMD records of James shown on 1871 Census 204/00 002/OL 002 Inverurie,Drimmies

Phanuel Duncan Head Unm 48 Farmer born St Cyrus
    Christina " Sister " 27 Housekeeper " Montrose
Phanuel " Father Widw 78 Retired Farmer " Benholm
James " Son Unm 18 Employed on farm Born Aberdeen
As Phanuel senior (1792-1877) was married to Susan Graham(1797-1863) I consider they were the grandparents of James
Phanuel junior (1822-1888) shown as Unm is also recorded as a Batchelor on his death cert....so just who is the mother of James?!

Have you found James in the 1861 census?

The 1871 census has James' place of birth transcribed as Hudeen, Aberdeenshire. Is that a genuine place or a mistranscription - or is it supposed to read Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire?

1861 Census shows James age 8 Grandson of Head (Phanuel age 69) conclude he is the son of Phanuel age 37,Unm !!... think 1871 Census birthplace looks like Aberdeen ..can confirm Alexander( Born 11 April 1821 at St.Cyrus,Kincardine died at Drimmies.Inverurie 3 Oct 1888), was so far as I am aware, the firstborn of Phanuel Duncan & Susan Graham ..the Alexander Duncan/Margaret Graill seems to be a false trail..thus we are left with the possibility that James was brought up by the family mother unknown ..appreciate all your help

Don't think you can conclude anything from this - he could be the son of any one of Phanuel and Susan's children.

Why is it a false trial - have you seen the marriage certificate for Alexander & Margaret and can subsequently eliminate this Alexander as son of Phanuel & Susan?

Can't find any records of marriage of Alexander & Margaret..Phanuel & Susan had 4 sons who survived to maturity viz: Phanuel (1822-1888),Aikman(1826-1900);John(1831-1895),Geor1836-1904)..the last 3 have researched fairly well.. Scotspeople site searches produce no results
