  • Immigration through Southampton

Does anyone know where I can find lists of immigrants coming into Southampton between 1780 & 1820 please ?

    Thanks

i think your only shot of emmigration records would be to look for naturalisation papers. even then im not sure how many immigrants would have been naturalised.

I don't think Southampton was much of a port then (I stand to be corrected), certainly not on the scale of Bristol or London. And I doubt whether there was much, if any, formal record-keeping. Cargo was much more important than people.

Thank you both. I've tried the naturalisation records without success. Someone told me Southampton was an immigration port, as opposed to Portsea, which is where the people are that I'm looking at. But, if they were right, I agree...it wouldn't have been on a very large scale & it's a bit early for records. Just posted on the off chance
