Did people have to provide evidence of who they were in order to get married. I am assuming that in many cases people may not have their birth certificates so if they moved into another area and changed their name would they be able to marry in that name?

    Hi, Welcome to FTF.

Even now you don't have to prove anything to get married, so likely not much then. The main constraint was through banns in each parish church to find out if anyone knew anything to prevent a marriage. Also there was a the system of getting a license.

You can assume any name you like provided it's not for fraudulent purposes so nothing to stop anyone moving district and saying they were Fred Bloggs instead of Charlie White and just get married.

I agree with Margaret - you could marry in any name you chose and didn't have to prove a thing to anyone. That is why there were so many bigamous marriages, lol!
