  • Skeletons found in Bethnal Green 1848 - Newspaper reports

Looking through the St Matthews Bethnal Green burial register I noticed the following unusual entry:

"TWO SKELETONS FOUND IN BARNET GROVE, BURIED 23 NOV 1848'

Looking at the British Newspaper site I see the story was reported twice once in Nov 22 1848 edition of 'The Morning Chronicle' and again in November 26 1848 edition of 'The Era'. I don't unfortunately have access though, can anyone enlighten me as to what this was all about as my interest has been piqued! Thanks.

Two female skeletons one about 40 and the other about 16 were discovered by John Price 25, cabinet maker of Barnett Street, Bethnal Green while digging in his back garden, they were buried about 18 inces below the surface.. The surgeon at the inquest at the Royal Oak, Barnett Street thought they had decomposed there. Jury decided there was no way of knowing how they had died.

Thanks Jill, I suppose these days there would have been all sort of forensics etc to solve the case, but not so back then. Certainly a macabre case.
