  • Searching Ancestry - help needed

Hope this isn't the wrong place to post this. Keldon on 17-9-2011 posted a link http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?h...=&pid=16791056

to search for someone in prison. My wife subscribes to Ancestry, could you please describe how to do this in simple terms?

    Thank you

Hi Robin, welcome to Family Tree Forum.
I am going to move your post to a thread of its own so that the replies don't get muddled up with Mike's query.

If you mean how to search for someone in prison, it really isn't any different to searching for someone in the census.
However, sometimes you will find that only initials are used for their name, so for example if you are looking for a John Smith born 1880 Lambeth, you might have to search for a J S born 1880 Lambeth.

Does that help, or have I misunderstood your query?

Are you looking for someone in particular that you need help with?

        Welcome to FTF, Robin!

Elaine has already made a start on answering your question, but there are a couple of other points worth mentioning...
        1. Ancestry often defaults to the new search format, and doesn't make it easy to find a link to the old search format. Many of us prefer the old search, since it's less likely to snow you under with redundant "hits". If you need help to find that, we can probably explain.
        2. In all the searches - not just Ancestry - we often find that "less is more" is a good maxim. You can often miss the genuine "hit" because someone has mistranscribed something - or there was a misunderstanding (or someone just lied!) at the time of the (e.g.) census, so that a name, or DoB or PoB appears inaccurately in the electronic database. We can offer suggestions about that, too, if you feel that that would be helpful.
