  • Genealogy's Star - Copyright Claim vs. Copyright Reality

This is another posting that concerns copyright in the USA and is not applicable in the UK and Europe.
In the UK and Europe it has never be a requirement to register copyright, therefore the posting falls at the first hurdle.
In addition a collection of public domain works may be complied and be entitled to database protection (a particular type of copyright) for 15 years from the last addition to the database.
This copyright recognises sweat of the brow which is not covered in the USA legislation.

Taken repeated extracts from such a database or even putting a single image online is enough to breach the copyright of a database.

Forum users should be aware that following the American advice could result (and has) in very expensive European and/or UK actions and should not really be posted on a UK genealogy forum.
    Cheers
