  • Military question

Hi , I have got a picture of my Uncle Alfred Savage ,It is a group photo a board in front of them it looks like it reads as 1926 COY AAPC Basutoland anyone have any idea where this could have been taken, and why was the army in Basutoland .
    Thankyou Lynda

The AAPC was the African Auxiliary Pioneer Corps - there are bits and pieces of information on the net if you do a search - and some book extracts in Google Books

Any idea of the date of the photo - 1926 Basuto Company have 9 WW2 casualties listed by CWGC who died between 1942 and 1945 - all "African" names -

    KOROTO S
    LEOLI L
    MAHLOMADALA T
    MOSELE T
    MOTSAMI A
    NGAKANA A
    NTSENE Q
    RATHEBE MOSEBI
    TSEOLE M

4 have identified graves - 3 in Italy and 1 in Israel

There is a South African Military History Society article here - http://samilitaryhistory.org/vol085nc.html - that gives some details - though 1926 Company isn't specifically mentioned

    Cheers
    Sue

Basutoland was one of the many red bits on the map of Africa.

Hi and thankyou , the picure was sent by my Uncle while he was out there so I do not have a date . Alfred died during ww2 on 9/12/1940 he was then in the RAF and was stationed at RAF Driffield and is burried in Driffield Cemetery . Will have a look at the red bits on the map .
