(Incase the link doesn't work, it's the grave of Allison Bays, buried in Kilgore city cemetery,

I would have said the birth date is March 3_ 1818 myself.

Death 1?.5.1890. Following the American dates convention, if it was the same at the time as it is now, that would be the 5th January or possibly 5th November 1890.

I see the contributor has photographed a lot of graves so unlikely to be connected with the family.

      Thankyou Anne.
I didn't see it as the alleged 1815. My immediate reaction was 1816??, but 1818 would fit my theory of Allison's origins remarkably well.
I don't think Allison and his wife had any children (at least, none who survived past their early years to show up in census) so there would be no direct descendents.

              Thankyou, Julie & Judith.

In 1851, Allison was recorded at the home of my direct ancestors, who lived in Reighton, East Yorks. (I think he was a first cousin of gt-gdma.) He was recorded as born at Hunmanby c 1815.
Yesterday I went to the record office to look for a baptism with information about his parentage - the Hunmanby register 1815- 1818 was illegible:(at best, faded writing at worst. The transcript for those years was missing from the file. (S*d's Law!!)
Neither could I find his 1851 marriage, so I achieved nothing! I'm pretty sure he was illegitimate, so am reluctant to buy the cert as it wouldn't help with parentage.
IF he WAS illegitimate, the person I think was his mother had a child bp Feb 1815 and another bp in Oct 1820, so 1818 would be quite feasible.

ETA - thanks Julie for putting up the image.

                Jay,

presumably he went to the US then? would their records not help you at all?

                  Sadly not, Julie.

They were in the same area of Texas 1860 to 1880, but the census information for those years lacks detail.
No census for 1890 (the year Allison died) and I don't know what happened to his wife Jane (perhaps she remarried??) No universal death records in Texas pre 1903.:(

I need to go back to the record office and widen my search of marriage registers.

                          Thankyou, Raven.

Thanks for the new link, Julie, I hadn't found that site.
Seems it's a bit like an Ancestry tree, lol, the cemetery people copied what they thought were the dates onto a card. Everyone else since has just used that model!

I'm not too worried about having the precise date of death, but 1816, and especially 1818, makes my theory a good possibility. If he was born in 1815, and if that was correct, it's back to the drawing board.

He is just a twig, but I won't really be happy unless I get him placed on the right branch.
