I don't know if it helps but when his son Leslie Waters enlisted in the Australian Army in 1918 it says his father lived in Nash Cottage Gravesend Kent....I can't quite read it but I htink it says Chalk after Nash Cottage.

I've tried lots of less-is-more experiments on FMP, without success, I'm afraid.

What's the betting Elaine.. Spain would find him!

Sorry...I badly worded the opening post.

                He is a ship builder.

And I can't find him in the 1901 census.

I'd picked up "ship's carpenter". If he's a ship builder, then he may also be recorded as a shipwright, and I did see some of those in my playing around, yesterday... I just can't recall whether there were any with enough right parameters to be your man.

Chalk is a small village nearer to Rochester than Gravesend, so maybe worth looking in Rochester area? In 1901 Chalk comes under Strood which is part of Rochester.

Many peole living Gravesend/Chalk/Rochester worked on boats/barges/ships on the Medway so could he have been on a boat somewhere in the area?

The latest census has him with wife Minnie, and children, he is entered as born Limehouse London NOT Gravesend Kent.

Interesting as there is a Thomas Waters b Limehouse and age 38 living as a lodger at 42 West India Dock Road Limehuse on the 1901 census. He is down as a ships sealer and single!
