  • Ferrier - Poplar, London Map Location Sought

    Hi,

This is my first post, so, firstly, apologies if it's in the wrong place!

I'm trying to find the location of an address from a a 1920 birth certificate of my grandfather Harry Ferrier. The address given is '38 Barr Street, Poplar'.

I have looked at various street maps of Poplar (1867 onwards) and also of neighbouring Canning Town/Plaistow where the family resided in the 1911 census. (In addition to maps of today.)

The actual birth was at the mothers home in Commercial Road (Mile End Old Town SW) but it's the family's location at the time I'm looking for.

My g-grandfather was a dock labourer at the time of my grandfather's birth, so I'd assume Barr Street is somewhere nearby the local docks.

Any help from any map detectives would be very greatly appreciated.

Seems to have gone but here's a link to old Poplar

Don't know if it was bombed in 1940 but there's a list here

London's Blitz is recorded in meticulous detail by London Fire Brigade records. See - for the first time online - how they showed September 7, 1940, the first 24 hours of attacks

or could ask where it was on this Polar forum

I've found a couple of other references to it that place it as "off the Ratcliffe Highway" (which I think became Commercial road, and as being in Wapping. Still can't find it on a map yet!

If you can't find from any of JBee's links you could try Tower Hamlets Local History Library

I can't see any prices for searches but it might worth a call.

          Thanks

Thanks everybody, I'll follow-up on those leads.

I did wonder whether it was built post-1911, hence not being on the census.

          Regards,
          Andrew

Unfortunately everywhere in london has changed over time from old houses and streets being wipeout for newer buildings, changing of names, completely changing an area or in my case putting a park in! It makes it hard trying to find out information and pictures from a period of time before they changed and the memories fade into nothingness.

I am pretty sure there was no Barr Street, Poplar.
Are you reading a real birth cert, was it hand written, could it pos be - I dunno - perhaps Bank Street.
Where were the family living in 1911, perhaps its the same street, or nearby. What is a siblings address?
Sorry about all the questions. I love maps and am determined to find your address

Using the wonderful Mapco site Keldon highlighted in another thread I've found a Burr St on a 1908 map. It is between St Katherine's Dock and the London Dock (almost in the river!) It is also not far from East Smithfield where an earlier Sun Fire Office record (1824) places a BARR ST. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a...=London+Region

MAPCO Map And Plan Collection Online : Bartholomew's Handy Reference Atlas Of London & Suburbs 1908.

Then to complicate matters further there's this 1846 reference to Barr St, Ratcliff http://search.lma.gov.uk/scripts/mwi...1691053?RECORD
Which would place it nearer to Poplar (Broad St and Butcher's row are near Stepney Station on the 1908 map) but there's no sign of Barr St or anything similar nearby....

On this site there is a Barrs Road and a Barth Road...http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hitch/g.../lonstr_b.html... 1911 doesn't seem to show a Barr Street or Barr Road in London..
Are you able to put up the address on here if it's on a cert for example...doesn't seem to show here either http://www.maps.thehunthouse.com/Str...et_Names.htm#B I wonder if it was shortened from something?..

So, I have since now found that Ratcliffe Highway is now called St George St.

Therefore, I think that Barr Street is most probabaly Burr Street (just left of London Western Dock on the map below) near St George St and therefore a possible reason why it is mentioned (albeit only once) in the archives as Barr Street off Ratcliffe Highway.
                    Plausible?
