  • marriage of John & Margaret Mary

I'm looking for the parish record of John Treleving Hambly's marriage to Margaret Mary Rogers on 3 Aug 1856 at St Marys, Whitechapel. Ancestry has an odd record, I think it's the banns, but I'm interested in the witnesses to the marriage.

    Thanks
    Sarah

    Hi Sarah

Do you want the good news or the bad news first ??

The good news is, you were right - this is a record of the banns.

The bad news is - on 27 Jul the minister (or whoever) used the last page in the Banns book and simply wrote 9 further sets of couples on the end papers - just names of bride and groom, no dates of banns. I don't know who put in the date 3 Aug, maybe its just an arbitrary one.

This means the actual marriage register has not been uploaded to ancestry for 1856.

    It does however say

John Treliving Hambly of this parish
Margaret Mary Rogers of Bathwick Somerset

Which is more information that the 8 preceding couples.
I am not sure, but I think the banns should also have been announced in Bathwick.
If you could find where the actual marriages register is held, you might be able to find the witnesses.

      Thanks, Di -
Yes, I thought that looked a bit different than average - thanks for looking.

Anyone out there know where the St Mary's Whitechapel Parish Register is? Has it survived?
