  • Hit a brick wall ........can anyone help!

    Hi
I am trying to find the birth certificate of my great great grandfather, John Turner Lee Richard.

Death certificate found states he died april - jun 1935 in redruth at aged 65.
he always celebrated his birthday on 31st dec (1869)

I can find him in the cenuses after he married - married susan jane george in july-sept 1892 in redruth district - i have a copy of the certificate and it has no fathers name!

Can find no birth certificate. or census before marriage.

The family story goes that his parents died when he was young and he was brought up by neighbours.
I know that when he married he was working as a gardener and story goes he worked on the Bassett estate, at Tehidy l (illogan, cornwall (near redruth))

    Any ideas

As registration wasn't compulsory then, perhaps he wasn't registered. If not, he was probably baptised though Where does he say he was born?

Hmm, I wonder why there are three surnames there? Perhaps he was registered under one other than Richard??

The nearest I can find is in 1881.

John Lees Richards aged 10 in the Redruth Workhouse.

          Also in the Workhouse are

          Emily Richards born 1848
          Elizabeth Ann Richards born 1868
          Eliza Jane Richards born 1874

          May be a connection.

As far as I know, all the Register Offices in Cornwall are now unmanned and any approach would need to be in writing.

                    thanks for the replies

The census' say he was born in Redruth.

Heather positive thinker that is his death info, yes the same person.

He had no family, from what we’ve been told. so not sure about the workhouse.

Val wish Id never started have thought about those two, but they were registered a few months after he was born

anyone know if i can find job info.

You say he celebrated his birthday on 31 December. If he was born on that date then these registrations are possible. My own grandfather was born on 29 May 1900, but wasn't registered until September quarter 1900.

this looks very plausable Jane, as males and females were seperated in the workhouse its possible that Emily was Johns mother. I see from the other census that she was single and a mother, and was also in the workhouse in 1891 at Redruth. I have found her in Illogan in previous census, which would tie in with what you know. I would think that the best way to now progress would be to have a look in the pr's for a baptism for John Lees Richards.

my own gt grandfather was born in dec 1866, though he wasnt registered until JFM 1867 and always gave his year of birth as 1867!

If he was born 31 Dec 1869 he would be registered under Jan -Mar 1870 as he probably wouldn't be registered on the day he was born and the next day would be Jan so it would be in that quarter.

I think parents have 6 weeks to register a child so this often happens.
