  • opinions please, right man and marriage etc?? Lincolnshire.

In my tree I have a Benjamin Goulson abt 1779, Woolsthorpe, near Grantham, Lincs.
I know nothing more about him but have just found a marriage, census and death and wonder what you all think, do they match my man or are they the details of someone else? It's the leap from Woolsthorpe to Coningsby that has me wondering.

    groom's name: Benjamin Goulson
    bride's name: Sarah Elmitt

hmmn, i'd be tempted to say yes, they are one and the same, it all depends how far he'd have to go to get work.. woolsthorpe>>>coningsby is how many miles? 20? so that wouldnt be a really bad distance to go for work? Guess it depends if you can find any other info to prove/disprove this theory.

About 30 miles or so Julie, about the same distance as Sarah is from her birthplace at the time of the marriage.
It's probably fair to say that post 1807 everything relates to the same person, just trying to prove if it is/isn't Benjamin b1779 is the hard bit.

Seems no children and the gap from 1807 Coningsby to 1822 at Louth is a blank, there is a 34 year old Sarah Goulson, born Lincs, family servant in the 1851 somewhere but I haven't seen the details to know if she may fit anywhere, it would be too much to hope she were born Coningsby, it might have pinned them down a bit.

Pre 1858 probate is a blank I think, not sure about post 1858 for the name that might tie up some other bits either, whichever Goulson I look at there are always gaps in records they fall into.

Thanks, right place and time to be close to other family still working in the trade.
The age on that record just seems to confirm that the post marriage details are for the same man and would also be as close a match to the dob as I could hope for.

Sarah is Waltham apparently, going by the census anyway.

Mmm, maybe a Mary then, i'll look tomorrow but there doesn't seem to be any kids to Joseph/Sarah, just depends if they slipped away somewhere after 1807 to parts unknown. Nothing obvious on lincstothepast, IGI or freereg.

something isnt right here, in the 1861 she is living with her father Emlin? Goulson who is a widower, but she has children that are 'Weathers' aged 23/20 so why use her MN 10 yrs earlier, or was it because married women were not supposed to be in service?
