  • Are these contenders for my ancestors???

Still looking for an elusive lead to discovering the earliest days of my ggfx6, one Benjamin Goulson.

Documented facts in reversed chronological order

LDS and PR from archives for Burial

    Benjamin Goulson
    Gender: Male
    Burial Date: 28 Jun 1731
    Burial Place: Ropsley, Lincoln
    Marital Status: Unknown

*headstone in situ at Ropsley is legible and shows spelling as Goulson, aged 54, suggesting yob is c1677.

Probate makes reference only to his children, no siblings, cousins etc are mentioned

    1704-1718 Baptisms of children
Via the archives and LDS all are recorded in the spelling of Goulson, LDS also has variant spelling of Gulson and Gulston for three of the children, all events at Ropsley, Lincolnshire.

    Children are;
    Elizabeth 1704
    Page 1705
    Joseph 1707
    Mary 1712
    Henry 1716
    Benjamin 1717
    Elizabeth 1718

    1703 Marriage

Broughton Sulney, Notts (also known as Upper Broughton). The original PR records the surname as Gulson, no reference anywhere yet found to the Goulson spelling. Date of marriage is 27/05/1703.

    Pre 1703

No details known, eg place of birth, name of parent(s), names of siblings or spelling used for the surname.

Neither the name Anthony or Margaret are found in post 1703 events anywhere in the family I have traced (170+ individuals). Can anyone see another reason reason why his lot may NOT be my family? And how can I try and settle the query?

    Hi Glenn

I have a similar problem in Shropshire - I could not find a marriage for 3xggf Richard Page, but found one about 6 miles away in Herefordshire. Richard had a son and grandson named Reuben. There is a Richard Page baptised in Clee with a brother and uncle named Reuben Page, father Richard, grandfather Richard. (and Great grandfather Reuben Pearce) But is the Herefordshire marriage the right one ?? Is the name Reuben enough to connect the family together ?? How do I prove it ?

Looking at the map, the towns you mention, are in the sort-of reasonable range of people moving around. As we know, spelling was never a priority in parish records, so I would not discount on spelling only, or on burial age, no-one seemed to care really about accuracy of age, either, before Civil registration.

I would pencil them in as your family, pending looking for any further evidence of the Loughborough people.

i take benjamin's marriage makes no mention of where he was living at the time? do you know if it was by banns or license?

have you looked for the benjamin in leicester's death? i thought i had an ancestor born in 1711 in france......the elder siblings had a habit of dying as children (infant mortality was especially high in this town for some reason) and i was right, this baby died. but 4 years later was another with the same name.

It was after banns, though i'm working from memory, wife Mary was about the same age and no reference to place of residence.

Ropsley has a few Goulson/Gulson events at around the date of the marriage, several Gulson events at nearby Melton Mowbray for the period which makes things difficult but they always seem to use Latin spellings of forenames such as Henrici.

hmm i have difficulty proving families that far back, but the families i do have were well off with unusual names, so i could be positive about the connection.

have you looked for a will? for joseph maybe? it might be a good idea to see when parish registers begin in the towns you are looking at-maybe he is from the area but the registers only begin after you expect him to be born.

I have some dates, many back to the 1560's so that isn't looking too bad. As for wills, again it's really the variant spelling and potential for lots of sons, cousins, nephews called Joseph and Benjamin appearing. The earliest will I have is 1731 but one from the late 1700's grants monies to four different cousins by the name of Benjamin and three called Joseph, how they ever worked out which was which is beyond me, that doesn't include the sons of course and the wives don't help, all called Ann or Mary. Most are worth between £700 and £1000 so not small affairs either, though a couple are less than £200.

Post 1837 death certs have been a nightmare for the wives, I have 3 stating, widow of "unknown at this time".
