I decided that I must purchase the death certificate of my GGGrandfather William Wells.
The last census record I found was in 1891 where he was a widower and a pauper in Portsea Workhouse. There was another William Wells in the same place but he had a middle initial of H and he had been born in Portsea, whereas my William was born in Winchester (St Cross). Their ages were similar but William H was said to be married (no sign of his wife though).
When I searched the 1901 census neither of them appeared.
Searching the death registers produced two records - one in 1894 and one in 1900 neither of which gave a middle initial. Even if I buy both certificates I may not be able to separate them as the ages vary, although I believe my William (born 1818) is three years older than the other (born 1821)
To complete my confusion they both married ladies called Sophia!
I thought one could ask for checking points when ordering certificates but this facility seems to have disappeared. I mght be able to separate them if I knew the occupations.
Has anyone any suggestions please?
