  • RAF service records

I would like to send for my late father's service records. he joined as a young lad in the early 1930's and served about 36 years, and I am next of kin. I know his years from 1945, but I would like to know more about his war years. What sort of form do I need and do I send it to RAF Cranwell for info or the War Office.
    Any information will be appreciated.
    Regards Pat

I haven't got the info just to hand, but I did obtain my father's RAF service record. If I don't get back to this thread fairly soon, send me a PM reminder. ~There may be some relevant info in the FTF Reference Library. ~Christine

Some times Ann Swabey is kind enough to lend her knowledge to such questions?

                  Snap!

Just picked up this link, after looking at the National Archives guide on (RAF) forces personnel and records:
Get military records of service for the Royal Navy (including Royal Marines), British Army and Royal Air Force - who can apply, how long it takes, cost, how to apply.

                    Hello Pat:
I think this will help us.

How to obtain your Service record, or the Service Record of a deceased relative

If you have served in the Royal Air Force and you need a copy of part of your Service Record, you can apply on a Subject Access Request (SAR) Form:

Subject Access Request (SAR) Form (118 kB)
If you are the Next of Kin of a deceased former member of the Royal Air Force and you would like to see what information is held on your Next of Kin's Service Record, you can apply on this form:

Application for Next of Kin or Enquirers with the consent of Next of Kin (193 kB)
If you are not the immediate Next of Kin of a deceased former member of the Royal Air Force and wish to see details of a their Service Record, you can apply on this form:

General Enquirers Request for information on a deceased Service Person (167 kB)
You should note that only a limited amount of information can be released to a general enquirer.

I sent off for 2 sets of RAF records a couple of months ago, at the same time. One set arrived after about 6 weeks, which I thought was pretty quick. Still waiting for the other set though, so be prepared for a wait!

I was interested to see that there was nothing obvious to pick up a difficult episode in my father's RAF career. I know it happened, but it's been discreetly ignored. I believe that that is a matter of general policy.

We had the same thing, very little information on dads RAF service records :( yet I am aware of some quite startling occurrences during his service in Burma.
