  • Charles Henry Hicken

    Hi

    Can anybody help,
I am trying to trace my fathers ancestors, I have got as far as my
    Great Grandfather Charles Henry Hicken

His Marriage certificate states married February 1883 aged 23 his occupation was
Iron plate worker, his Father was Edward Hicken, occupation Shoemaker

In the 1891/1901/1911 census Charles Hicken born 1860 Occupation Iron plate worker born in Gloucester

The Problem is I can’t find a birth for Charles Hicken in Gloucester for 1860,
I can’t find Charles Hicken living with his parents
And I can’t find an Edward Hicken who is a shoemaker

Who did he marry in 1883?

Looks like he was Boarding with the Sherlock family in 1881

There is a Frederick Hicken also boarding with them, probably Charles' brother?

    Remembering: Cuthbert Gregory 1889 - 1916, George Arnold Connelly 1886 - 1917, Thomas Lowe Davenport 1890 - 1917, Roland Davenport Farmer 1885 - 1916, William Davenport Sheffield 1879 - 1915, Cuthbert Gregory 1918 - 1944

Looks like his birth was registered

      Oct-Nov-Dec 1862 Gloucestershire
      Vol 61
      Page 239

This would confirm he is the right one (father's name) and also give you mother's name which would make it easier to find them on the census.

The record for that one has been corrected by someone who has a tree on ancestry, might be worth making contact to see if they are related and can help with your research.
There's also a Mary A Hicken listed and she is shown as a daughter and married so where is her husband if it is not one of those already in the household.

That makes me think that all the Gloucester births are brothers and Charles + Frederick are her brothers in law so described as boarders in the household.

The only Samuel Hicken I can find b c1857 in 1861 is this one http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?h...=&pid=18175583 but the father is Frederick occ Cordwainer (which is a shoemaker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordwainer ).
I wonder if Frederick died before Charles knew him and therefore wasn't entirely sure of his name?

Looks like the death for the father Frederick
                      Frederick Hicken
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1863 Registration district: Gloucester Inferred County: Gloucestershire
                      Volume: 6a Page: 190

PS the tree I've found on ancestry shows this death to be for Frederick age 4 and it has an exact date so someone has seen a certificate.

Now here's a puzzle a death for Eliza Hicken in Gloucester
                          Eliza Hicken
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1861 Registration district: Gloucester Inferred County: Gloucestershire
                          Volume: 6a Page: 152
Can't see another marriage for Frederick before he dies in 1863

Looks like the marriage for Frederick to Eliza he was born in Nottingham so this would fit.

I think several of the trees on ancestry are copied from one so it will be good if you can find out who did the original research and has the certs. I would ask if they will send you copies so you can see for yourself and therefore be sure of the findings.
None of them can show where Frederick senior and the family are in the censuses you were looking to find Charles so I would have a healthy scepticism about everything until you see proof !
