  • Any Leicester(shire) specialists ?

I'm looking at a marriage around 1800 in Leicestershire on Ancestry. There's a note at the side which says HC & the entry talks about the marriage of John Hudson of H & Ann Oase of C. Does anyone know what H&C refer to please ?

That is probably the Parish where they came from. Can't tell you what thet stand for though.

Have you looked on FreeREg to see if they have transcribed your area yet. I did some of Leicester and know that lots more have been done.

If it's a Phillimore's transcription, the abbreviations are explained at the start of the book.
Where did the marriage take place?

Just checked the marriages on Ancestry, and the marriage between John Hudson and Ann Hoase was in 1789.

Found it on the Phillimore's marriage disc: the marriage took place on 7th June 1789, and it's listed under "Marriages at Prestwold, including Burton-on-the-Wolds, and Cotes". John was from Hoton and Ann from Cotes.

According to Genuki, Cotes was in Prestwold parish:

Thanks very much to everyone......to anyone who has been subjected to the Hudson torture, it looks as though I've found the deaths of William's parents....in Shepshed. But I can't find their wedding or baptisms, so that's why I'm ploughing through all these marriages

                    Grey,

they might have married in Loughborough, or maybe Whitwick.. i'd start from where you have the deaths, and work in a radius

It might even be worth looking in Notts as I my 3 x G Grandparents lived in Barton in Fabis Notts but were married in Prestwold and Ann was born Hoton. It is not far from Notts / Leices boarder.

thats true Lin, it does seem to be right on the cusp of Leics/Notts/Derbys borders, so will have a wide net to cast, not much help to Grey I know but it does give alternate avenues to persue.

                          Thanks very much again.

This is connected with this, ......could someone double check for me, please ? There's a Mary Hudson, born 1776. She's on the 1841 census in Shepshed, Leics, but she isn't there on the 1851 census. I can't find a death for her between those dates in Shepshed. Could someone check to see if I've missed it, please ? (I think she may be the Ann Hudson who died there in 1843)

                          Thank you

The only adult Mary Hudson I can find among the Shepshed burials was buried there in 1856, aged 87.

However, there is an Ann Hudson buried in Shepshed on 23/5/1843, aged 67. This might be her death (Loughborough RD includes Shepshed):

                            Deaths Sep 1843
                            HUDSON Ann Loughbro' 15 88

The registration would be a bit late, but I think you were allowed 6 weeks to register a death.

I think I've given you some of the Shepshed burials before, but in case I didn't, there's a John Hudson aged 57 buried there on 2/1/1828, which would make him about the right age to be Ann's husband. The only other John was buried there in 1830 aged 20.

am confused Grey, am I missing something? but how can Mary HUDSON have a death registered as ANN HUDSON? (maybe i'm not seeing things right, due to sleep deprivation).. I saw the death for the 1843 Mary HUDSON, but there is another one in L,boro OND 1846 for a Mary HUDSON. and another in L'boro AMJ 1851 for a Mary HUDSON

Gray's looking for an Ann Hudson, and I think she was hoping for a Mary Ann who sometimes calls herself Ann and sometimes Mary.

Yes, that's right, Mary.....looks like we've found Mary & Ann....but only one John between them ! Just to complicate matters, there's another William baptised in Shepshed in 1813. Someone has had a look at the registers for me & says it's definitely John not William. (& not John William)....but he calls himself William on the 1881 census ! Then there's another William Hudson baptised the same year (1813) parents John & Ann (the same names as my William's parents) in Kegworth. I've mailed one of his descendants & they've decided to adopt a John & Ann Hudson living in Kingston on Soar as his parents as they couldn't find any other candidates.

There are quite a few "family notices" in the Leicester Mercury from the time, so I think all I can do is to try & plot them.

Please send a rescue party if you don't hear from me by 2015
