  • Another name for Kitty please?

Is there another name for Kitty - or were babies just baptised Kitty?

Mum has a painting of a family owned cottage by a 'Kitty Smith' - but she can't remember just whose daughter she was.

I have tried looking for the birth of a Kitty with some of the family surnames - but haven't had any luck, so I was wondering if Kitty was a 'pet' name.

Has anyone else come across this name before?

Perhaps I should mention that as Smith isn't a family name we think it was one of the daughters who married a Mr Smith.

Mum is sure it was painted by a family member.

It seems to vary. Had a cousin called Kitty but birth record on Ancestry ( I just looked it up ) shows Catherine.

I have one who was baptised as just Kate.
There is no absolute truth - and no final answer.

I have a Kitty reigistered as Kate - she was named after her mother Kate who died shortly after the baby's birth.

Many thanks folks - I'll re-start my search now using those christian names.

Kate had occurred to me but for some reason I didn't think of Catherine/Katherine......:o
If those names don't come up with anything I'll move on to Clara and Kathleen.

Our Aunty Kitty was baptised Marjory Laura Alice, so don't get too locked into Catherine/Kathleen. It was usual, but not always - she might have been a "Kitty cat" - my sister used to get "Bid" not from Bridget, but from a "little bitty (biddy) bit".

I have an ancestor named Caroline, but was called Kitty. Caused a research hiccup for several months, as the family myth about her was that she had died as a child. Not - she lived many years beyond that.

My mother's birth name was Kathleen, however she called herself Katherine, and called by her friends as Kit.
