  • Possible variant spelling/transcription from the 1700's?

    Sorry folks it's another Goulson query.

    I have two Elizabeth Goulson entries born to one couple;

    first one was bapt 23/07/1704, second one was bapt 6/6/1718 and buried 1/1/1719, details were accessed many years ago at the archives.

    Familysearch has the following burial-
    Elizabeth Gudband
    Gender: Female
    Burial Date: 13 Jan 1715
    Burial Place: Lincolnshire, England

    It doesn't record a place or parents but it's the only record I can find for that spelling anywhere in the 1700's (only one other which is an 1821 marriage, the name doesn't appear on freebmd either).

    Am I making the burial fit the circumstances or should I forget it altogether?

    The Familysearch entry gives the source film number as 1542356, which corresponds to four parishes: Denton, Foston, Great Gonerby and Grantham.

    You could try trawling the PRs for those parishes on the new Lincs PR site to see if the original burial entry gives any more information, or whether it's a mistranscription:

      Having had a quick look at the film notes, I think it's Great Gonerby.

        Here it is; no further information, and it does look like Gudband:

        I wouldn't have thought it was close enough to Goulson, myself.

          I had been thinking that "dba" might be a misunderstanding of 'ulso", but that's definitely a "d" at the end of the name. And I agree with Mary from Italy, "and it does look like Gudband".

            Mmmm

            Thanks for looking, this lot were pretty close to Grantham at the time but Ropsley is a separate parish, given the children I know of I suspect the first Elizabeth died between 1712 and 1718, the Gudband event would fit the timeframe but is it one of mine?

            I did also find the baptism records of all the children named above, transcribed as Gulson, Gullson and Gulston on the pilot site about a year ago which doesn't help determine the possible variants either. One thing is certain though, the 1703 marriage at Sulney is recorded on the pr's as Gulson but from that point on the spelling used on all original documents such as probate for example, and also on headstones is Goulson.
