  • Naming patterns of children

Hi all, just trying a different approach to a long long standing problem.

Was there ever a naming convention in England, such as first daughter named after maternal grandmother, first son after paternal grandfather?

And how about a forename just being omitted completely from one branch of a family but retained for generation after generation by another?

Straw clutching in the extreme going on here today.

      Thanks Elaine

Seems my lot decided on their own convention then.

Certainly in my family they didn't seem to know the 'rules' LOL

"first daughter named after maternal grandmother, first son after paternal grandfather?" - my mother's eldest aunt was named after her maternal grandmother, and the eldest uncle was named after his paternal grandfather

I'm still no nearer to learning anything, my other thread http://www.familytreeforum.com/showt...rom-the-1700-s shows the children and birth order, presumably the first son was given mums' maiden name and one of the later sons has a name that only ever appears the once in the entire tree, so heaven knows how/why that came about.

think ahead glen, just because a surname appears as a given name doesnt mean it is a recent ancestor. my 5th great grandparents gave their son the name hellyer as a middle name. it turned out to be a great grandmother's maiden name. it took a while to get that. so keep everything in mind, and think outside the box!!
