I gather that that marriage was in 1867q1

And his first name does look more like "Walter" on the 1871.

They seem to be seriously elusive!

They aren't obvious in 1881 or 1891. There aren't any obvious deaths or marriages.

I tried looking for first names, in case the surname were badly mistranscribed, but still couldn't find them.

I can't see them anywhere obvious, so I'm not sure what to suggest! Emigration is often the explanation for that sort of complete disappearance. Unfortunately, that's too early for the FMP passenger lists. I can't spot them on Castle Garden, but may not be looking hard enough.

Unfortunately, I need to get some other stuff done, so can't spend more time.

I hope you get some more succes than this.

        One possibility is:

record title: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958
        name: Walter Neal
        registration district: Shillelagh
        event type: DEATHS
registration quarter and year: Apr - Jun 1878
        estimated birth year: 1842
        age (at death): 36
        volume number: 2
        page number: 864
        digital folder number: 4200221

From family search. Is there a possible Irish connection (if not family, then occupation)? It might be worth looking for other family members in Ireland to see if this idea has legs.
