  • Dr Barnardos to Canada

Can anyone tell me if the reference no. and Microfilm no from the Library and Archives to Canada will give me any more information of where children were sent after they reached Canada from the ship that transported them from Liverpool and Dr Barnardo's

Also how to find information of 2 children that were in a Dr Barnardo's home 1893-5 before they were sent to Canada with 300 other children
    regards pat

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb....hhomechildren/ This is a great source but I like the site tweetybird geneaogy too which has a full database of shipping and ships lists of children and staff http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb....ogy/index.html but I think this may deal mainly with Austrailia but well worth a look .

She does list microfilm contents so that may give a clue, it also has a name search too.

You might find some useful links on our Evacuation and Evacuees page in the reference library.

In the British Home Children section on that page you will see that one of our members (George) has offered to help if you send her a private message. Just click on her name and a message box will appear. Any reply you receive will be shown in the notifications section at the top right of the screen.

Have you found the passenger list for the children on Ancestry or Findmypast - sometimes they give a destination location.

This link will show what kind of information is available about the child and the microfilm number it was from in some cases and where they arrived at.

If you are referring to the passenger list link which shows that Amy Steele age 13, arrived in 1895 on the vessel Sardinian - the image is on Ancestry and the only other information available is that the children were in the charge of M. Owen (or Mr. Owen) representing Dr Barnado.
Not sure about the image for Robert - when did he arrive?

Have you contacted Barnardo's itself? If you are a direct descendant they will (typically) provide details of the circumstances surrounding your home child, a photograph of the child, and details about the child from the receiving institution. The cost varies depending on how much information they have on the child. If you go here:

See bottom of page re. making connections. There is also:

                    Good luck

I asked about my records and they wanted to charge £100 for them, not cheap, so I just got their photos which is amazing and have managed to track them down myself right up to their deaths .

Was Robert actually born in 1866 - and yet in the Dr. Barnado's home in 1893-1895?

There is a Robert Steele, born 8th January 1886 shown on the 1901 Canadian census.
His birthplace is given as England.
                                    Occupation Servant
                                    Arrival date in Canada 1894.
He is living with Thomas Croxford (occ farmer) and his family, all born in England.
He is living in the province of Alberta.

If that is the correct Robert Steele, then given his date of birth as 8th January, this looks like his attestation papers for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force.

Do you know Amy's date of birth?

I cannot see an Amy Steel in the 1901 Canadian census, but there is a Maggie Steele born 25 April 1882 England, living in Ottowa, Ontario - occupation nurse.
Living with Ernest and Clara Lemaire, and their son Ernest.
