  • Ahnentafel report help please

I am using FTM2009 and I have 2339 people in my family tree.

When I run the Ahnentafel file with myself as the first person numbered 1, my parents are then numbered 2 and 3, grandparents 4,5,6,7 and this continues until it reaches a file that I had imported and it then the numbering seems to go wrong. The last person on the report my 24th generation is numbered 11796482.

    How can I correct this?

Ahnentafel numbering would allow for all possibilities on your tree, regardless of whether you have a name for that ancestor.
    You are 1,
    parents 2 &3
    gparents 4,5,6,7

so for each generation the numbers are doubled

    which would mean
    1st generation - 1 number allocated
    2nd generation -2 numbers allocated
    3rd generation -4 numbers allocated
    4th generation -8 numbers allocated
    5th generation -16 numbers allocated
    6th generation -32 numbers allocated
    etc

... if you carry on this numbering for 24 generations you would probably come to the number you have quoted!

      Elaine,

Thank you for your quick reply and explanation; I thought I had done something wrong.

        Hi

That generations starts at 8388608 and goes to 16777215 and means that you have 8388608 direct ancestors in that generation, (which I think is 23 generations, 2 to the power of 23 from my 1950 school maths)

I had misread the original number when I first posted so had to recalculate, gave my brain a bit of arithmetical exercise rather than family history exercise.
