  • School masters (1830s to 1890s)

    Hi all,
I have been searching the Wilson side of my family in Carlisle, and originally from Poulton lancashire, on the census returns a few members of the family have their occupations as School master/mistress.

Does anybody know what type of training would these people need? or can point me in the direction of where to look

    Thanks in advance
    Gemma

You didn't need any training - anyone could set up and run a school. There was no regulation of "schools" and what happened in them
State Elementary education was only introduced in 1870, and then it wasn't compulsary at first.

In "Nicholas Nickleby" by Charles Dickens there is a schoolmaster Wackford Squeers who appears to be less intelligent than his pupils.

        Thankyou both!

I was confused as these families werent very well off (if they needed to pay for any type of training) but if anybody could do it that makes more sense!
It certainly explains why children didnt have much of an education then!
