  • Death from Typhoid 1911

    Hi,
A great uncle - Albert Edward Jones born 1886 in Hull East Yorkshire joined the Royal Navy 1908. He sailed on HMS Highflyer December 1910 and unfortunately died at the sickness quarters Trincomalee Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) from Typhoid 17th July 1911 aged 25. Wondered if anyone knows if he would have been buried over there.
    Regards Marlene.

Almost certainly I'd have thought. I can't imagine they'd risk bringing back an infectious body?

It is/was normal to bury a body within 24 hours in the Tropics - no refrigeration and as Kate says, who would risk bringing back an infectious body?

Thanks for your comments Kate & OC. Yes agree - infectious body but wondered if there would have been a marked grave .

He was in the navy so he might have been buried at sea - even less risk of infection.

            Welcome to FTF, Marlene!

            I tried here: http://www.nmm.ac.uk/memorials/AdvancedSearch.cfm
in case there were a memorial in Ceylon / Sri Lanka, but there were only 12 Rest-of-the-World JONESes, none of whom was an Albert.

There are increasing numbers of databases for graveyards, so it's worth trying from time to time -= maybe even just a full-name googling (i.e. using inverted commas to force the name into being a single term instead of three separate ones.)

PS ONe of OH's ancestors was on the crew of Highflyer - but rather earlier than yours.

Presumably, since you already have so much detail, you have his Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services info from TNA? (DoB 16 December 1886, PoB Hull).
