    Hello,

Having exhausted all avenues in the search of an elusive ancestor's demise in Buffalo, NYS I decided it was time to throw some caution to the wind and get the help of a professional.
I know it is advisable to get quotes from more than one but I am having difficulty finding
more than one (reliable, I hope) person.

Has anyone gone down this road in New York? If there is I would appreciate any recommendations, together with experiences of same.

    Many thanks.

Why not first put the details of your elusive ancestor on here dreen22, there are lots of very clever and experienced folk on here who may be able to help. Good luck.

      She did in the past.

Dreen22, I don't know anyone. I did contact a genealogist from a professional association, but never had the research done. Don't know if rules allow me to post the link? I'll PM

As I don't know anything about researching in the US, why do you think a professional will be able to access records that you cannot?

Having watched some of the current series of WDYTYA USA, they clearly have to make extensive use of professional researchers to get anywhere. The difference is that TV companies and celebs have deep pockets! And the professional researchers seem to specialise - US records are extremely local, so you'd actually need someone who knows their way around Buffalo records. Your choice could be extremely limited and you might have difficulty evaluating their track record.

Please do be careful when seeking out a researcher as I am a member of the India List at Rootsweb and last year there was an offer made via the rootsweb pages for look ups of BMDs in India and a box number.
Several people replied including myself and discovered that for each birth ect you had to pay in dollars USA the equivelent of £60 for each record.
I questioned the researcher as to why he chose a box number to have cheques forwarded up front and he expected me to believe that he was a researcher of 30 years and honest and trustworthy.
He then started to attack and name call a person who was well known on the India boards for helping for free when she offered to do the look ups for nothing.

If I were you I would ask at the family history centre for the area that you need for a reccomendation.

            Edna
I had his offer removed from the boards.

It is not that I choose to use a Professional, but having exhausted all other avenues over the past few years, and not being able to get further "friendly" help on the spot I know
of no other way if I am going to find the information. I am reluctant, it has to be said, but there does not seem to be any other way.

So far I can only find two, independent that is. There are several associations.

Because they are on the spot and I am here in England. People living in the US have done a little digging for me in the past but there time was always
limited and unlike UK records, at least Vitals, are scattered.

Have you tried (or know about) a great site called Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness?

Go to http://www.raogk.org/newyork.htm and look at the Erie entries. There are several people there who may be able to help or, if not, may be able to advise on who might be able to!

I have used this resource in the past with good success.

Let us know how you get on
