  • Trouble finding a marriage

Gladys Dorothy Brookes was born 22 Mar 1901 and baptised 10 Jul 1904 (info obtained from the LMA records on Ancestry)

According to her baptism her parents were Arthur Edward Brookes and Susan Elizabeth.
I searched for siblings and found 2 brothers and 2 sister both with the same parents.

Susan died sometime after the birth of Gladys and Arthur Edward remarried Annie Louisa Mabbutt in 1907. However on this marriage cert it lists Arthur as "single unmarried"

I have tried to find a marriage for Susan and Arthur but seem to have drawn a blank, Can anyone help?

According to the census Arthur was born in Worcestershire and Susan in Hoxton, Middlesex

    Maybe a mistranscription?

Arthur Edward Brooks (no E) and on the same page Susan Elizabeth White - Oct-Dec 1893 - Fulham ref 1a 473

I can't find a likely death for Susan Elizabeth though

Thanks Chrissie - Do I feel stupid. I am sure I checked for Brookes without the E.

Do you know why his second marriage would have him as single unmarried instead of Widow? His second wife raised his children so there was no hiding from the fact?

No neither can I. Gladys' son is positive she died before his grandfather remarried. But I guess it depends what they were told!

I was thinking perhaps bigamy, but as the children didn't stay with their mother I wonder if she was ill in an institution or something?
I assume you know that you have the right second marriage?

Yes it is the right second marriage, apparently she was quite a nasty step mother - Gladys left home at 14 to get away from her.

I've found a possible family in 1911 but they are living in Kings Norton Worcestershire. Was Arthur Edward born c1867? If it's him in 1911 his age is given as 44 and Annie Louisa 45.

p.s. Was that Arry really his name or didn't the enumerator sound his aitches?

Sorry just off having a bath.

Yes Arthur was born in 1868, so it looks good.

No his name was Orry, so the Enumerator did get it wrong, but not becauses of his aitches....lol
Still trying to find out where the name comes from - must be a family thing

The only Arthur Edward birth I can see in 1868 is Brooks without that E again - born in Lambeth?

Arthur according to the census was born in Oldbury, Worcestershire. I think I have found him in 1871 with his father Thomas and mother Pheobe.

On Arthurs marriage cert it lists father as Thomas Occupation Engineer and in 1871 Thomas lists occupation as Engine turner(?), but I cannot be certain that this is the correct family - needs a bit more searching

I have found an Arthur E Brookes in 1866 Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire

For info. - engine turning is the intricate pattern you see under the enamelling on snuff boxes and carriage clocks.

Thanks John, so would it be likely that he would be refered to as an engineer?

I have looked at the actual page and she is definitely under Brooker with no second initial. I suppose it's possible though.

I checked the image too, I am hoping that the actual record is for Brookes and mistranscribed for the index.

The area and age are right, so I will order the cert and hope for the best
