  • Cant find Great Grandad in the 1881 census ?

    Hi All,
My Great Grandad Thomas (Joseph) Harvey was born 8th Feb 1861.
His father is Charles and mother Mary (Ann) Killick.
I have them in 1891 and 1871 But I cant find him in 1881 ?
    He married Elizabeth in 1883.
    Kind regards......John

Have you found his parents in 1881.
Do you have the marriage certificate to Elizabeth, if so what was his address and occupation at the time of the marriage?

Thanks Elaine, No I dont have the parents in 1881.
Thomas married Elizabeth married on 6th August 1883.
On the marraige certificate Thomas listed as a tank maker, his father Charles listed as a labourer.

(Although I have seen Thomas listed as a coal porter elsewhere)
There address is listed as 31 Medland Street, although at 31 in 1881 there is another family listed there. (obviously the marraige is two years after this)
Actually the address reads Middling or Meddling Street, I am assuming that it is supposed to be Medland as my family is associated with Medland Street.
      Thanks and kind regards......John

Are you sure that the 1891 census is the right one. Both Thomas and Elizabeth (Betsy) seemed to have lopped quite a few years off their ages!

Thanks Elaine, My work pc blocks certain sites so I cant view the census.
I will have a look when I get home.
            Regards......John

              The 1891 census link shows:
Thomas Harvey c 1869 Ratcliff, London
Elizabeth Harvey c 1870 Mile End, London
Charles Harvey c 1887 Ratcliff, London
              John Harvey c1888 Ratcliff, London

At their marriage in 1883 Thomas said he was 22, therefore born 1861 and Betsy 21, therefore born c1862

Do you know where Betsy was born? Have you found her and Thomas on the census after their marriage, apart from the 1891 which you gave above.

Oh hold on, it has let me look at FMP, I see what you mean about the ages (never spotted that before).
But I am sure that is them at 26 Medland Street.
The John listed is my Grandad.
                  Regards......John

.. and are you sure that the marriage you found is the right one? Do you have your grandad's birth certificate to confirm mother's maiden name?

Thanks Elaine, According to the census Elizabeth was born Whitechapel (the subject of another thread of mine).
I am still struggling to find her birth.
I have them in 1901 at 24 Medland Street, and in 1911 at number 24 I can see the ages have changed yet again
                      Regards......John

I do have his birth at home which I am sure is correct, but I can check that when I get home.

Ignore that - can see them now in 1901 where they seem to be a bit more truthful with their ages - also mother in law Mary von ???? is living with them. (transcribed as Christenbury but could be Spendingbury!)

Thanks Elaine, Yes those darn Von thing-a-wotsit's are driving me mad .
Isnt it strange that Thomas has dissapeared in 1891 ?
                            Regards......John
