Laptop battery

I've been getting messages all day today about my laptop battery saying 'Your battery is operating normally but is nearing the end of it's usable life.' And Dell are prompting me to purchase another one.

Has anyone else had this happen and how long might it have left to function normally please?

If it helps I have had this one for a good 4 yrs.

Thanks for that Val, explains everything clearly. It looks like I may have been using mine for double the time they are stipulating. Nevertheless, I haven't yet noticed any dullness or inability to recharge itself, so I will just keep an eye on it for now.
