Currently I have three different gen programs, each one loaded onto a different computer.
No, I am not a trillionaire but a year ago I decided to pry myself loose of an old windows
xp comuter and trade up to windows 7. The third computer is a laptop which goes on my
travels. Currently I have FTM 2006 on the laptop, Legacy 7.5 on the xp model and My heritage on the newer one. No problem keeping uptodate, just cut a gedcom every week or so and enter it onto the other two.
I quite like FTM 2006 but do not think it worth the yearly update - I guess Ancestry has
to make money somehow. Question is - is it worth updating or are the newer versions so
    much faddle daddle ?

FTM 2006 - to me gives a clearer pic than the others and is very easy to use.

Further to above. I like FTM 2006, it does all I currently want in a indexing program. I get a bit cynical about FTM bringing out a new version nearly every year, smacks
to me of plain commercialism and I really don't want to go down that route.

Have you looked at Family Historian? It's license allows installation on to two computers for your own use and it works well with Dropbox to keep 2 computers in Sync.

If you have an Ancestry subscription you will find that FTM 2010 etc connects to your account and gives you hints all over the place.
I am not to keen on it

                Mike,
Yes I have an ancestry account (only to ancestry.uk as virtually all of my rels came from there or the Channel Islands. They keep trying to get me to
sign up for the worldwide service but I ave use for it. I don't need any of the fancy doo-dahs that they are loading FTM with, just a plai old program that will
enter my family tree and some stories about them where applicable.

Dave, FTM 2006 is still my favourite program of the series. I do buy newer ones from them but only because when an even newer one is due out they give terrific bargains with 6 months premium or world wide subs thrown in - but I only use the programs to activate the sub as I find them too complicated and too prone to errors. But if you are happy with FTM2006 and dont want a bargain ancestry sub, dont bother to buy a newer edition. I tend to use ancestrys own tree facility a lot now anyway.

                    Heather,
Great to see another positive thinker, no I don't need all their gimmicks so stick with 2006. The only thing that worried me was unless you turn on the privacy button all your inputs
go out onto the web. This I dodn't want - my research is my own business which I will happily give out to members of a forum or friends but do not want it to be displayed on all and sundry
commercial sites. Hope I am not being too picky.Cheers David

Put it out on the commercial sites , you don't know who will see it. My wife found out that her great grandfather went off after having four children and had another family of three, neither descendants knew about the other.
In my own family I have this year been contacted by another family member who has solved a problem in my tree that I have had for 20 years.

One from Tribalpages and one from Ancestry .
Theses are just two of the helpful contacts I have had by publishing my and my wife's trees.
