  • Royal Engineers and Photography

I'm looking for information about Royal Engineers' records of early photographers. I believe my ancestor was a photographer for the REs at sometime in his service (~1850-1865). He was a Corporal, but his later CDVs are labeled "Late Photographer to His Majesty's Government".

Are there any surviving records of who was trained in photography, and where they served?

See if you can find the army records first through FMP or TNA to see what is written about his photographic career in the RE's. I have one who was a gymnast in the army and I found a few things on his army career appertaining to his gymnast qualifications. Ancestry do also have army records but these are much later First w War Records. FMP have the early records.
