  • I need a bit of help deciphering a profession please

    Hi

I need a bit of help deciphering a profession please of William Edward Jones (b1870) so I can go back and find him in the 1891 census.

In the 1911 census William Edward Jones was a Motor Driver
In the 1901 census, he was a Cab Driver/Groom
When his son Christian Jones was born 22/05/1897, William's profession was Cab Driver
When Christian was baptised in June 1897, William was still a cab driver

But when William Edward Jones married Edith Annie Pattemore on 1st April 1894, I can't for the life of me read his profession. (Their marriage is on Ancestry - he also used the middle name Henry)

    It looks like 'something maker?'

    thank you

    Sandra

I thought that the 2nd to last letter on the first word is an p also. It looks to me like the first word starts with a B?

His father was a Glazier and Glass bead maker, so it may have something to do with that area of work?? and then he went on to be a cab Driver, I'm really stumped!

I keep thinking it says snowflake, but I don't suppose that's likely

The last two letters of the first word might even be a double s.

Are you sure he was William Edward? The marriage cert has William Henry.

I think this is the family in 1881:

                      1891:

Father George on his own (possibly lodging with the Jane who was with his family in 1881):

1871 (William with parents George and Elizabeth):

Haven't found an obvious candidate for William in 1891 yet.

                              Woo Hoo...brilliant, thank you Mary:D

All I need to do now is find William in the 1891

                              This is him in 1901

                              and in 1911

                              This is son Christians baptism

So although he used the middle name Henry when he married, he also went by the name of Edward.

Thinking aloud, the first word could well be Brush. If you think about the mechanics of making a brush, Shaft doesn't make a lot of sense - it's only a piece of dowel after all. But it could be that - a fairly unskilled job. The part that the bristles go in is usually called the Head, and the second word doesn't look like that at all.
