    Apr (abbreviation for apprentice). His next three brothers are ditto'd.

          On seconds thoughts. It may be an old S. To us it looks like a lower case f. There's an assistant groom a few pages back and the Afs of that sure looks similar to way your occupation is written. That would make it Afs for assistant.

            Oooh, so it's either assistant or Apprentice.. Hmmmm... I'll try and find them on later census' soon and hopefully get a better idea then..

              How I read it is that he is an Assistant, but an Apprentice Gardener...

                I've never seen any other reference to "apprentice" gardener.
                I've come across apprentice notated as "app."

                I think I'd go with assistant gardener.

                  Hadn't thought of a "long" s. Asst. perhaps more sense as an abbreviation. Anyway, the four of them were obviously helping their father.
