  • Canada - Ontario - 1920/30's

OH's father spent 12 years in Canada from 1924 until 1936 - he went with Dr Barnardo's to a farm at Woodstock Ontario and was working thereabouts for about 2 years until he went off on his own.

Barnado's in Canada have kindly sent us the file they had on him for the first 2 years.
Is there any way of finding out where he went and what he did for those missing 10 years?

He returned to UK from Montreal to Greenock in 1936 on the Andania.

If he actually bought his own place there may be some record in the Ontario archives, but it's a bit of a long shot.

I doubt he bought anything UJ - he went out with Barnardo's as a farm boy and came back as a labourer. Unfortunately he died when OH was a boy a few months after his wife so there's no-one to ask.

OH and I are going to Canada on a quick visit from visiting daughter in US and hope to visit Woodstock and wondered if there were likely to be any records to try before we go or when we're there.

Libraries in Ontario have City directories issued each year - they list their occupations ,addresses etc.A phone call (1p a minute using discountuk site) or even an email could get you a librarian to find out /lookup for you -they charge about 5/10 canadian dollars.

If you haven't overloaded the system, the Ontario Libraries also run an Ask A Librarian scheme. I was able to get some answers like that for free about Leonard BENNETT in Toronto in the 1916-1924 date-range.
