Do you have any idea of dates, first names etc. - although please do not post details if the people are still living.

There are some Hay-Ellis entries on FamilySearch which might be of use.

Can you confirm if they are both deceased, if not I will need to remove their names from the thread.
          Were they born in India?
Do you know your mother's maiden name?
When and where did they marry?

There is a death in the England/Wales BMD index:
            Geoffrey Pusey Hay-Ellis (born c1907)
            Death 1970 3rd quarter
District: Croydon, volume 5a, page 1771

            Is that your father?

If so, go to the FamilySearch site (click on the words Familysearch and it will take you directly to the search page) and you will find a baptism record which seems to match.

            Geoffrey Persey Hay-Ellis
            Baptism/Christening Date: 06 Apr 1907
            Baptism/Christening Place: Madras, Madras, India
            Birth Date: 12 Mar 1907
            Father's Name: Charles James Hay-Ellis
            Mother's Name: Estelle Irene Donella

I would suggest you work through all the other Hay-Ellis entries on that link to see if you can create family groups.

Could this be the marriage of your grandparents?

                    Wanklyn Winifred M

You would need to get the marriage certificate to get any more detail. The marriage certificate would give you her age, the name of her father and his occupation but would not give her place of birth.

It's possible that your mother's birth certificate might be in the overseas index. I'll have a look.

Sorry to ask again - but can you please confirm that all these people are deceased.

Order it from the General Register Office
                              It will cost £9.25

You will need the following information
                              Year 1937
                              Quarter Jan/Feb/March
                              Name: Hay-Ellis Geoffrey P
                              District: Kensington
                              Volume 1a
                              Page 252

I cannot see a birth registration for your mother in the overseas births - were they a military family?

Re: Winifred M Wanklyn - your grandmother - it's not exactly a common name so this birth registration could well be her:
                              Births Sep 1916
                              Wanklyn Winifred M
                              District: Ross
                              Volume 6a
                              Page no. 770
                              Mother's maiden name: Exton

At some point you are probably going to need a birth certificate for her, and this may well be the right one! I cannot see any other birth registration in England that would fit.

Before you start looking at leads, they may have already been covered. There are several family trees on Ancestry.co.uk which feature these people. It may be worth your while going for Ancestry's free trial period and see what's there.

If you do, type ' hayellis ' in the surname search field under the Family Trees tab.

i cant even locate patricia's birth in 1937, in the foreign or english indexes. the mother is given above as being born in sept 1937, but the grandparents married mar quarter in 1937 in kensington, london. i searched for hay* with mother's name wank*, and there are 2 matches for haycock, but i cannot find any hay-ellis, hay ellis or hayellis births for before 1962 in england.

searching for births, deaths and marriages, there is only one result for hay-ellis in england, and thats the marriage already mentioned.

It's quite likely Patricia was born in India: Geoffrey & Winifred Hay-Ellis sailed from London to Bombay on 25th June 1937. Geoffrey was 30, and a 'Store keeper', Winifred was 21.
