My husband has been trying to find his great great grandfather and his family, name as above, cant find them in census for 1841 or 1851, and his great grandfather, Edward, born abt 1829 and married in 1850, but cant find him till the 1861 census in St Pancras.Middlesex. Needs to find 1841 record so he can find the siblings names for his great grandfather, expects they would be with g/g/ grandfather, who he has been told was a Royal Marine, but cant find record of him or his wife Ellen.

Family of BENJAMIN VINCENT in 1800s

1851 census
Edw Benjamin Vincent, 22, plasterer, head, born Chatham, Kent
Jane Vincent, 24?, wife, born Brighton, Sussex.
Living at 5 Henry Street, St. Pancras.
I see the marriage cert to Jane Lowman is online on the Ancestry LMA records - do you have that? It confirms that Edward's father was Benjamin, but says he's dead, and doesn't give his occupation.

There are several references to Benjamin Vincent, a marine, on TNA website. Amongst them are attestation papers in 1810 when he was 18 (he was born in Claydon, Suffolk), and his application for admission to the Greenwich Hospital as an in-patient in 1838.

They may or may not relate to your Benjamin, of course. You can apply for photocopies of the documents, but they may be expensive, I doubt if there'll be any more information in the sick book, but the attestation may be interesting.
The fact that he was serving in Chatham when Edward was born suggests that he's the right person.Last edited by Mary from Italy; 01-02-11, 09:54.

If Benjamin is the one whose records are on the National Archives site he can't have died before 1838, which was when he applied to be admitted as an in-patient at Greenwich. Perhaps he was there in 1841?

There is a Benjamin Vincent in Greenwich in 1841, but he's a tailor, and with a family that doesn't seem to be connected with any of the others we've found (Sophia aged 35, and children William 8? and Charles 1). From the later censuses it looks as though Charles and William were born in Chatham.
