He seems to marry as James Leegriz Lockley
    1875 Jan-Feb-Mar
    Kensington

    ... if that helps!

I was wondering what the death said but the only James L Lockley I can find of the right age is dying Oct-Dec 1910 - born c 1856 - aged 54 - Petrsfield, Hampshire Sussex ref 2c 102. So not much help as no middle name, only initial.
Chrissie passed away in January 2020.

That page is printed - were all the GRO index pages printed by then?
It seems possible that the name started off as Le Gris, say, or something like that.

But the 1856q1 birth reg index entry (handwritten) is James Leegryz LOCKLEY.

A surname from further back in the tree, perhaps?

Just done a bit of googling...

Le Grys - early medieval English, according to www.surnamedb.com
And possible links with Le Grice and similar-sounding names.

                  I was just intrigued.

Tracking middle name "Pafoot" back enabled me to pinpoint accurately an extra couple of generations, plus some side-branches in my mother's tree, when a name like "Anne FOSTER" who died before the 1851 census would have been extremely hard to narrow down.

I also have "Dupree" as a feminine name in the same part of the tree. I suspect that it must be another family name - but I haven't spotted it yet!

PS - had a quick play on TNA Quicksearch. No "Leegryz" or "Legryz" or even "Legrys", but plenty of "Le Grys"
PPS - and, if you can find a link, then this site is likely to prove useful: http://www.legrice.net/
