  • Can anybody tell me what this means??

    Hi all,
this is from the military records of my great uncle and was wondering if anybody can help us decide what it means?

    Wounded:- GSW Rt arm sev.21 4/17 : GSW perf.Chest 23 11/17
(sorry it wont copy- written exactly as on form- written under the militery history section on the sheet)

On a seperate part of the records there is a reference to a scar above the major L pectoral muscle

    Any help much appreciated
    thanks gemma

It looks like gun shot wounds to right arm 21 April 1917, and perforating the chest 23 Nov 1917.

"sev." ... several? severed? - may depend on further info to interpret.

If the worst comes to the worst, you could always try the 1914-18 forum - lots of specialists there.

Think it might mean either 'several' or 'severe' .....prefer 'severed'

Generally 'sev' is used as an abbreviation for severe

The reference to the scar - is likely to be in the general description and distinguishing marks section completed on attestation - so likely to be from a pre war injury of some sort

If you wanted to post a name/more details happy to have a quick look

            Cheers

On second thoughts, I think it must mean severe or several - had his arm been severed, it would be unlikely he would have acquired GSW to the chest 7 months later.

                Thanks all!

In all i was thinking Gun Shot wound was not one of them! must of been tired!

His name was William Rees Hughes- 40893- Royal Welsh Fus.
His address was 6 lower park street, Holyhead
He died in the military hospital 1/7/18 from pneumonia/influenza

We found out from these records he was in the Royal Naval Reserves- Is there records for these?

Thanks for all your help so far!
                Gemma

Oh... an i think Sev must mean Severe also- He surly wouldnt of been sent back without an arm??

No guarantee as to how much info it will have. But perhaps it'll relate to the family somehow, even if it isn't the William HUGHES you were after.
