  • George Woodman

Looking for some help with George Woodman born about 1817 in Hardway Gosport, then known as Alverstoke. Can see him in 1851 still living in Hardway with his wife Isabella Cleverley and there daughter Rosina.

I cannot find him any earlier.

Hiya Di...there is an extracted record for their marriageon www.familysearch.org in Saint Thomas church,Porstmouth,Hampshire 27th August 1841..Isabella is Cleverly ( not ..ley) so I presume this was after the 1841 census..Rosina was born sep qtr 1847...6 years later...were there no older children on the 1851 census ??
maybe he is in Portsmouth in the 1841 census.....allan

      same site...familysearch.org ...advanced search ..
George Henry Woodman christened 7th July 1816 Alverstoke,Hampshire ..parents John Woodman and Elizabeth...EXTRACTED record...that`s nice for you....allan
added...there is John Woodman married Elizabeth Biggs 20th sep 1813 St Mary the Virgin,Aldermanbury , London....seems a bit far away, but that`s the only possible 1806 to 1816 .....allan
also a George Daniel Woodman christened in St Thomas (same church as the marriage) in nov 1846....but that only leaves 10 months between Rosina and George births ???...bit iffy

In 1841, there's a John & Elizabeth WOODMAN in York St, Alverstoke, both 70(+). The only others in the household were: Thomas 25+ & Ann 20+ BONE.

There's no-one showing up conspicuously. Short of trawling through all the men in Alverstoke with a reasonable age, or with a possible name but wrong age, to look for mistranscriptions, there's not much I can think of, I'm afraid.

I have a George, born to George and Isabella in 1842 and died the same year. Then Rosina and then another George born 1851 but he died aged 8.

There is someone who does occasional look-ups at Gosport records office.

If you order his marriage certificate you will get Father's name and occupation.

If you're that close that you can get to Alverstoke RO, then it might be worth going to Portsmouth RO - or any of the Hants ROs which have the records for the Cathedral (St Thomas's). Then you can get a copy of the register entry for the price of a copy instead of paying full price for a certificate.
