Can anyone help..I'm trying to track down a book that was written by a George Bickers about his life as an apprentice on a farm in Laxfield dated 1882? I have looked on numerous book sites but they say it is unavailable and out of print....Does anyone know of this book or where i can get a copy, would be most appreciated.
Happy new year to you all. Brenda:o

Brenda - I would try the nearest big library, which looks as if it might be Saxmundham. If they have a copy they might be prepared to lend it to you on the inter-library loan scheme. You could explain that you are a family member. If they agree, you'll need to get your local library to order it for you.

It appears to have one of those endless titles, according to Amazon!
"Interesting incidents connected with the life of George Bickers, originally a farmers parish apprentice at Laxfield, in Suffolk, but now residing in Oulton in the same country"

It's not in the Herts Library catalogue, so far as I can tell, nor in AbeBooks.

A similar book, but much later, is "Brother to the Ox" by Fred Kitchen. He was a farm labourer in south Yorkshire in the early 20th. century. I met him once when he was an old man and I was in my teens. Apparently the WEA took him under their wing and helped him to write the book.

The Suffolk Libraries catalogue lists just two copies, both reference only (at Ipswich and Lowestoft).
