  • Difference between Boarder and Lodger ?

what exactly is the difference ?? thanks

As I understand it a lodger just pays for the room, a boarder gets meals.

There's also "bed and board" - bed to sleep in, board (as in pre-table) to provide your food.

If you followed Antiques Roadshow you'd learn that a sideboard is literally that - a table at the side of the dining room. And tables were originally boards on trestles.

Interestingly, our head teacher came back from a trip to Ann Hathaway's cottage where the guide had told them that "board" was in fact a door, used as a table for feeding lots of people. You could pay "board and lodging" which enabled you to sleep on the "table".

But boarders have food provided; lodgers make their own arrangements.

If you're happy to sleep on a hard wooden board I don't suppose a few crumbs would bother you!

There's a Breughel painting "The wedding feast" where the door's being used to serve the guests
